. . . tripping . Sara, I have an 8 year old Percheron/Paint gelding.. I have problems with him tripping
......(a lot!)..... I believe it's a laziness problem .....but I'm not sure because he's done it when I have
him very collected and up also. ...... he goes down at the canter. ....We have flipped one time ............
twice he went down hard enough for me to fly off. ....... I hardly ride him now...............I feel like he's
going to trip the whole time. ......... on the trail he's very spooky and.............. he will bolt. .........I
haven't done much with him on the trail because he's just so out of control and scared. .......He is the
sweetest horse on the ground or in the arena....... Ironically he's very lazy in the arena ......(Part of the tripping
problem?).........When he bolts on the trail he is the most fleet of foot and stable horse I"ve ever been on........I
don't think it has anything to do with health problems the vet says he's fine. ....... His feet are balanced
and done really well............... I actually could not find a .......horse shoer in my area who was good and was willing
to do him so I went to horseshoeing school to learn how to do him myself........... I then apprenticed for a little
over a year and now am a shoer myself. ........ All because of my draft. Funny isn't it? .......
I would hate to give up on him and right now he's basically a big dog........ I found your website and got
some renewed hope seeing all your pictures of you riding a horse that's built just like him!........ He is very
drafty. Anyways my biggest question is is there a cure for the tripping problem we're having. .........
I just don't want to flip and break either of our necks. I hope to hear from you..... Sincerely,
Jennifer Keneman P.S. Unfortunately
I am in Bakersfield California so I am no where near you.
HI JENNIFER . THANKS
FOR YOUR LETTER .....THANKS FOR LETTING ME HELP YOU. ....I ACTUALLY JUST GOT DONE MAKING A BIT FOR
A LADY IN baKERSFIELD....TOO FUNNY :0) ......................HER NAME IS JULIE LaNe.....SHE IS ON MY FRIENDS PAGE IF YOU WANT TO EMAIL HER...... ..YOU WROTE A GOOD LETTER ....I UNDERSTAND COMPLETELY ....IF....
MY DRAFTS ARE.... NOT IN SHAPE....THEY TOO TIP.. ALOT ....I HAVE HAD TO DEVELOP A. TOTALLY NEW TRAINING PROGRAM FOR THIS
PROBLEM...................ITS NOT SIMPLE...BUT..I WILL TRY TO EXPLAIN IT....SIMPLY TO YOU .......BEFORE YOU CAN
COLLECT HIM......YOU MUST TEACH HIM HOW TO LIFT HIS FRONT END ......STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR ........STARTS
WITH A SINGLE STEP...................DEPARTING INTO THE TROT OR CANTER IS EASIEST ...JUST PICK YOUR HANDS STRAIGHT UP
AND LITERALLY LIFT ...DO IT HARD ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY LET HIM FEEL YOU LIFTING ...HAS TO FEEL DIFFERENT THAN A COLLECTION
PULL ......AT FIRST I ONLY WANT... ONE .OR. TWO STRIDES .AND THEN I DROP MY HANDS AND ..........................LET HIM
TROT OR LOPE ON ...........IMPORTANT...THEN I LOOSE REIN STOP ...ALSO IMPORTANT.........REPEAT .DON'T
WORRY WHAT HE DOES IN BACK ..............AFTER HE GETS GOOD IN A DEPARTURE....TRY IT JUST GOING DOWN THE RAIL ............ASK
ONLY FOR A STRIDE OR TWO ..............NO MORE ......................IT HAS TO BE .............REALLY CLEAR.......
TO HIM ..........WHAT YOU WANT ..........BECAUSE IT GOES AGAIN HIS NATURE TO DO THIS .......
A MIRACLE SOON WILL TAKE PLACE ....HE WILL SOON LEARN TO DO THIS HIMSELF ...........ALL YOU NEED
TO DO IS .......HELP HIM A LITTLE.........AFTER HE GETS GOOD AT THIS.....BACK OFF .......THE WHOLE THING....... FOR A WHILE .............WAIT
FOR HIM TO START FEELING TRIPPIE AGAIN IN A FEW DAYS.......WHEN THIS STARTS TO HAPPEN AGAIN...........IMMEDIATELY LIFT
AND SHOW HIM WHAT TO DO WHEN THIS HAPPENS .......HE TOO HATES TO TRIP.....JUST AS MUCH AS YOU DO....TRUST ME ...............THE
OTHER THING I DO...........AND I'M MARRIED TO A FARRIER.... IS SHORTEN THE TOE ....ALOT....I SHORTEN THE TOE PRETTY
SHORT FOR ABOUT TWO RESETS .............OR UNTIL I CAN FEEL HIM REALLY START TO LIFT AND RESPOND TO ME ........AS
HE LEARNS TO LIFT.....HE WILL LEARN TO ........USE HIS SHOULDERS...... NATURALLY...THIS WHOLE PROCESS TAKES ABOUT 6 MONTHS ........BUT I SWEAR IS WORKS .........I RIDE MY CLYDE BRIDLESS......IN WESTERN
RIDING CLASSES WITH ORANGE CONES ..........HE HAS LEARNED TO USE LIFT AND DOES IT ALL BY HIMSELF NOW ............I
ALSO DO BRIDLESS REINING ...........IT REALLY COMES IN HANDY IN A FAST FLYING LEAD CHANGE ..............I HOPE THIS
HELPS ........THANKS FOR THE LETTER ......... . . . . . . . . . . .

and he will not pick up a lope/canter. ............. The girl working with him before me was scared and ...............tied
his head with .......................side reins and made him canter in the round pen, .......................I train western
pleasure and huntseat stock breeds ................(AQHA, ApHC, APHA) ..............Im not sure how to get him to move off
more collected for the lope, ................His hind end gets all tangled up, .....................he pushes his head down

. . THANKS RACHEL. YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME UN-DO-ING WHAT THE SCARED
RIDER CREATED. .................... THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY AND
YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO......................TOUGH YOUR WAY THRU IT
IM AFRAID.......SORRY. ....................THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO DO ........ YOUR FIRST PROBLEM IS
BALANCE . A
HORSE NEEDS BALANCE TO BUCK , HE CANT BUCK IF HE IS TRULY MOVING FORWARD . .............................. THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED
TO DO.. .LONG
LOPE HIM...OUT ON A TRAIL . ...................... I WORK MY HORSE UP TO LOPING 5 MILES OR
MORE. ..................... DO THIS FOR A BOUT A MONTH .......................YOU HAVE TO LOPE THE PLAYFULNESS
OUT OF HIM .......YOU NEED SHARP SPURS,,,,AND YOU NEED TO USE THEM....................................GET ON AND LOPE FIRST THING.......................DONT GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO PLAY...........................JUST
LOPE AND DONT LET HIM....................StOP.......FORWARD.....FORWARD.......FORWARD......SPUR... SPUR ....SPUR ................................THEN...ONCE
YOU GET HIM BACK TO A ..................NORMAL HORSE THAT CAN ACTUALLY RUN AGAIN .......HE
HOPEFULLY WILL HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT CRAP THE FIRST RIDER DID ......................PERCHERONS ARE LAZY .......................I
USED ROCK GRINDERS ON MINE ...................BUT HE ENDED UP GREAT ...DID EVERYTHING...ENGLISH WESTERN BRIDLESS
TRAIL REINING ........................................THE KEY WAS LONG LOPING... ..............EVERY
DAY .......................MAKE SURE YOU RINSE HIM OFF EVERYTIME . ........................ HE WILL CINCH
SORE ON YOU . YOU MAY HAVE TO RIDE HIM BAREBACK . YOU MAY HAVE
TO SWITCH FROM A BIT TO A HACKMORE AND BACK AGAIN. ......................YOU NEED TO LIFT ALOT ........................ BUT YOU
CANT DO ANY LIFTING TILL YOUGET HIM GOING forward.. .....YES I KNOW ITS KINDA BACKWARDS ...BUT IT WORKS...........I

................how can I get and keep his gorgeous thick feathers clean. ?......I have
heard to keep them soft,..... keep some kind of oil on them, ..but at the same time......... doesn't oil attract dirt....???

jumping . Hi, sara... My name is Cameron .. i have a Belgian draft,......... i was wondering if
it is safe to jump?...... I don't want her to be in pain....., or have leg problems,....have you had any problems? Thanks
a lot. Cameron . . . thanks cameron thanks cameron ...i jump my big horses over everything ......both in the arena.....
and out on trails.....they really love it ......if you make it fun for them......they will always stay in a positive
frame of mind....you too :0) ......thanks for the chat .....there is alot of great draft horse information
ON MY WEBSITE.. ...SARA SHALDA
 . . . . thanks Sara .. ..but how do i make it fun
for them? cameron . . . . .
WELL... WELL... THERE ARE A FEW THINGS YOU CAN DO 1. eVERY TIME YOU GO OVER A JUMP.....
YOU CAN GIVE YOUR HOSE A TREAT...AND PET THEM ALOT...REALLY MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT HOW GOOD THEY ARE...REALLY OVER DO IT . WHEN
THEY SEE HOW HAPPY IT MAKES YOU...THEY WILL REALLY POUR THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO IT . 2. YOU CAN RIDE
MOSTLY OUT ON TRAILS WHERE THEIR IS PLENTY OF ROOM TO REALLY CANTER AND RUN ALOT....HORSES REALLY LIKE THAT...THEY GET TO
SEE THINGS AND STAY ALOT MORE ENERGETIC THAN IN A DUMB OLD ARENA. DON'T GET ME WRONG....YOU MUST TEACH YOUR HORSE
HOW TO JUMP IN AN ARENA , ALL YOUR LATERALS AND FLEXIONS MUST BE TAUGHT THERE . 3.
WHEN YOU ARE OUT ON THE TRAIL RUNNING JUMPING AND HAVE A FUN FUN TIME....DO IT WITH ANOTHER HORSE WHO IS A REALLY GOOD JUMPER
AND CAN GO IN FRONT OF YOU AT FIRST ...LEAD BY EXAMPLE SORT A THING......SO YOUR HORSE CAN JUST FOLLOW AND GET SELF CONFIDENCE ....HOPE
THIS HELPS SARA SHALDA

BEFORE I ..................TAKE HIM SOME WHERE SO .............HE WONT TRIP SO MUCH .................YOU ON THE
OTHER HAND HAVE TO............... MAKE SURE HE DOES NOT NOT HAVETOO MUCH ENERGY BECAUSE......................
YOU DONT WANT HIM TAKING OFF WITH YOU ........................I REALLY THINK FROM NOW ON YOU WILL BE FINE WITH THIS NEW
BIT.................... SOMETHING JUST POPPED INTO MY HEAD..................BACKING UP...IM A FANATICAL BACKER WITH MY
DRAFTS .......I CLOCK JUST AS MANY MILES ON THE BACKWARDS ODOMETER AS THE FRONTWARDS ......................ANY TIME
MY HORSE FEELS STRONG ........ANYTIME HE FEELS LIKE HE IS GOING FASTER THAN I WANT HIM TO.........................I STOP
AND BACK HIM ......ONLY NEEDS TO TO BE TWO OR THREE STEPS .......................JUST ENOUGH TO BreakTHE FORWARD
PUSH HE IS PUSHING ....................KEEP IT IN MIND ....AND................ GET my-DRAFT HORSE TRAINING BOOK ;) sara shalda . . . . . . . . . . . .

where to start ?!hi sara...we just inherited 4
big draft horses...............i used to have horses as a kid but....... not drafts..................what should i be focusing
on first..?.....thanks terri jenson....thanks terri....im soooo gald you
wrote me.......................I
see so many people with a great love for horses but go terribly wrong in the beginning. .....................Don’t
get me wrong, .....we all make mistakes...................... I have made them to the hilt. .....They are usually
our best teachers. .........................Unfortunately when dealing with very large animals like draft horses,
.........................these learning curves can be dangerous and I’m sorry to say even fatal......... This is
my small attempt to help you in the beginning of your draft horse adventure avoid the big,
really big painful mistakes that could, ................. in the end, ............... cost you more
than just your pride, ................ they could cost you the lives of your family members.........take
to heart my advice...... I have been a riding instructor and
trainer a very long time...................... I have worked with many different breeds, ..........................in many different disciplines and have dealt with many different clients
in all walks of life...... use
these top 10 must have’s to get started on the right foot. Barn consultant whether you buy a barn or build from scratch it
is critical you bring in a long time high quality professional equestrian such as a trainer to show you
how to properly set up a safe, super safe barn.,,,Priorities should be: Wiring safety including watts,
amps, breakers, code requirements, and fire extinguishers. Lighting safety including guards, supports, switches,
even outlets used to plug them into. Heating safety including combustion sources, fire extinguishing & fire
prevention. . Hay storage, best if not stored in the horse in barn, must have vents, fans. Ventilation, fresh air
is crucial for your horses health. They are naturally outside animals. .Impact
zones identify every place your horse could kick, chew, cast, rear, charge thru, & break.. Tying remember different size and age and experienced horses need to be tied
very differently! .Riding lesson instructor learning
how to ride is totally separate from horse training. .................It is critical to learn how to handle
a horse ....in..... any situation before .....you actually learn what to do with these behaviors....................... A
good riding instructor will teach the rider how to..................... become one with that specific horse .... Every
horse is very different and .....................requires the rider to acknowledge the
true identity of that horses heart and soul. .............Horses want to be our partner..............
They want to love us. They want us to love them no matter if we own them or are just visiting for a while.............They
need us to listen to them...... A quality instructor will teach you to ....................become one with your
horse and truly understand what they are thinking and feeling at any given moment................. Also remember...... the
horse you are planning on buying may not be the best choice.By taking good riding lessons,...... a rider will be better
able to decide what type of horse they are comfortable with. .Tractor you will need a quality large tractor with a loader and a 3-point hitch for your drags and post whole
digger........ You will also need a good manure spreader.............. Quality
truck and horse trailer buy a larger than what you will need slant load.Check it on a regular basis for
hornet nests,...... mouse nests and sharp bolts, screws, edges, etc. Remember to pull your floor mats every
fall and scrub everything with hot soapy bleach water...tank heaters
in winter if you live up north like us in Michigan.... You will definitely need a good quality water tank
heater..................Make sure your horse CANNOT chew on any wiring. .....Some
heaters are submersed and some float.....I prefer the submersed............Make sure you keep an eye on any mice that
all come inside for the winter. . Fly spray the number one
distraction to horses and too.... you in the summertime is ........flies and bees........... Good pyrethen
oil based product such as B-Free or Endure is what we use.............. Apply liberally before each ride and .............wash
it off afterwards if the horse gets sweaty…especially in .........the more sensitive areas............. If
your horse freaks out when you spray them,.............. keep an extra bottle around with just water in it.............. Spay
them every change you get and ...............give them a treat before and afterwards. ..............You will
win them over eventually. Draft horse size Shoeing stock . If you have draft horses , you need a draft size shoeing stock............... Not just for working on
the hooves................. They are invaluable for bathing as well................ A good place to find these is at
Amish auctions. ...............They usually make them at every one I have ever gone to ...................They are
also really nice for ...........giving medicine to a horse like wormer.................... Also very handY if
you have an injured horse and must dress bandages, take out stitches, etc................... I definitely could
not live without mine.................... My husband is a farrier....... He
makes all my horseshoes from scratch..................... for each horse depending on how they are ridden................. He
and many other farriers refuse to work on drafts unless in a shoeing stock. .............. For
good reason. .................. There are many styles to choose from. Everyone has their favorites............... Don’t
forget a good quality 4 ft ladder too to go along with the shoeing stock for bathing.
 Round
pen beginner and novice riders need a round pen........ As you get more advanced, you will hardly ever need to ride in one............. In
the beginning,...........you must concentrate on your horsemanship and .................refining basic equitation skills. ................It
is nice not to worry about where your horse is going,.................especially
when you get to the cantering stage. ................The only time I use mine is to give novice-riding lessons or
.................to break a horse in the first day...................... The best round pen is 70-80 foot diameter with
solid walls 6-foot high, tilted outward a bit. ........\Quality farrier a good quality farrier is worth more than their weight in gold...................., seriously. .....................Every
horse has unique hoof issues and ....................finding a person who can easily identify and correct these conditions
is priceless.................... A horse that is in pain is a dangerous animal and .......................many
problems are caused by hoof related issues. Quality veterinarian draft
horses have unique health issues not found in normal light breed horses......................You need to find a good vet that
has experience dealing with drafts and ...................research draft health issues such as Clydesdale scratches
.........epsm and ringbone..................... want more information ? go to my books
page or email me sarashalda@aol.com ..........

Jul 2008 Subject:
tripping Hi Sara. .....This
is Julie Lane from Bakersfield, CA. I just read the letter from Jennifer who also happens to be
here in Bakersfield. ...I would like to get in touch with her if you can do that. ....................She
actually had questions that are very much the same as mine. ......................Bentley
trips a lot and will bolt ...(without
tripping on his feet) on the trail. ...................He trips walking. .......................I'm not sure
if it is being out of shape and/or lazy or because... of the sidebone he is dealing with. ......................He
hasn't been gimpy lately so I kind of think he's just not picking up his feet. ................. ...I was actually going to ask you ....................how much riding (including loping) is too
much for a draft horse? .................................When they get in shape can they be capable of doing a
12 minute lope? ....................................If his sidebone doesn't hurt him is that ok?.............................The bit you for made me works quite
well. .............. ...............I try not to do my regular riding around the stable or drill team practice with it because......................... I
don't want to hurt him or.................... toughen him up but................... if he is onery ...(wanting to buck
or charge) ..............................I put it on him. .........................I also have used it at rodeos because...................................
I don't want him taking off during the national anthem. ....I wish I could take him take him on the trail but my
nerves won't allow it. ........................HOW WILL I EVER GET MY GUTS BACK?!..............................I have had to adjust the way I handle him as he ...has ..........................started to act like
a four year old.................................... Getting a little pushy and in my space and stubborn. ........................No
more babying him. .........................If he doesn't step back when I ask him to ...I tell him to a little stronger.
...........................He's starting to get the picture now..........................I
keep waiting for my money tree to grow so I can take a summer vacation to your place and get ..........................some
good training and .....................lessons with my big guy.... I really want a life time of fun with him.....JulieLanesdogs@aol.com julie.....my friend from California....how are you girlfriend.......sorry i

My horse cannot stand still to save his life. ...................................When I

just stand still. .....................My trainer thought maybe hobbling him may help but ................was a little

he will stand there but always has to take that one step forward and
I always correct him by either backing him up or turning him and after a few times he gets it and
just stands there......................... When he is tired he will stand perfectly still on the

this something that will work itself out as he gets older?............................. I have my
