Clydesdale Feather query...Please help!
From:leslie.coveringconcepts@primus.ca

Hi Sara,  What an amazing web-site you have….most informative.  I found your site while trying to find out if my Clydesdale feathers will grow back.  I know….I really screwed up.

I have the most beautiful Clydesdale gelding; “Mikey”.  He is four years old now and I purchased him when he was only 8 months.   I am taking him to his first show the end of this month…we are going to attempt some jumping classes and some flat classes.  It was strongly recommended to me that we clip Mikey’s feathers so that we can be taken seriously in the show ring.  I had my coach clip his feathers and now by some others, I have been told they may not grow back the same.  I feel sick ……. I should have researched this before going ahead with clipping off his feathers. PLEASE give me your advice & guidance….what can I do? I eagerly await your reply and thank you so much for creating one of the best sites I have ever entered.  I live in Burlington, Ontario and am seriously thinking about visiting Michigan and attending one of your sessions. THANK YOU     THANK YOU     THANK YOU Kindest regards,Leslie Farnham

hi leslie ,
i got you email about scratches....i am so very sorry those people told you to do that...even makes me a bit angry that they are so prejudice against Clydesdales like that.....im sorry for your poor horse too GEEZE..........his mom is trying to make him into a warm blood...poor guy.......Clydesdales are phenomenal jumpers..........my clyde can easily jump even bridless....the good news is he will be fine....but just so you know...Clydesdale need.....need those feathers.....they have a  balm in the hair follicles that protect the white legs...its like chap stick almost......with out it...the horse will get sick...lame and be generally uncomfortable .......you must have felt his discomfort along with your own and became overwhelmed......stay true to your horse....he will my far more loyal and dependable than any human will ever be......i have shown grand prix jumping and quit due to the unrealistic lives those riders demanded of their horses......if humans were as smart as horses...there would me no need for trainers   ;0)..............one full year and your feathers will return......get him on glanzen and nutrena xtn immediately. good luck and thank you for letting me help you. i am honored.....sara shalda

Hi Sara, .... I was reading your article on scratches......n I've been dealing with this on my horse since November 2007...... I've had the vet out a couple of times...  he says this is a slow process to get rid of.... He is a paint with four white legs....  I have changed his hay, shavings..... and used many different medicines and creams. .....,,The most recent is sulfer mixed with vegatable oil ......and I noticed it slowly coming off. ......There are some days that I notice swelling which I then get nervous..... and wondering if I'm doing more harm than good. .......Can you tell me how long that it took before it   cleared up on your horse?......... Did you turn your horse out for pasture?..... I've pretty much kept him inside all winter to keep him clean and dry...... I noticed that your a 231 area code which I wasn't sure if a Muskegon, Michigan number. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. This is the most frustrating thing that I ever dealt with.  Thanks, Jacki

THANKS JACKI  THANK YOU FOR THE EMAIL....  I'M SORRY FOR FOR YOUR SCRATCHES WOES...ITS SO AWFUL I KNOW.
MY CLYDE STILL HAS IT TODAY A TINY BIT. .... I DON'T REALLY THINK ANY ONE THING IS THE CURE. ... I THINK THE DISEASE CHANGES OVERT I'ME AND YOU MUST CHANGE WITH IT. I DO KNOW FOR SURE INTERNAL STUFF LIKE LYSINE- .....VIT C- ......ANTIOXIDANTS I USE GRAPE SEED EXTRACT OIL- ......GLANZEN- NUTRNA XTN .....SOYBEAN MEAL
THE COMBINATION OF MY INTERNAL FEEDING AND MY EXTERNAL SALVES ARE THE KEY  .......I WASH HIS SORES 2 TI'MES A WEEK  EACH TIME I WASH THEM ...I SHAMPOO ABOUT 4 TIMES .... THEN PUT ON CONDITIONER LIGHTLY AND BLOW DRY REALLY WELL  THEN LATELY I'VE BEEN USING DMSO AND NITROFURAZONE  IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING GOOD.  ABOUT TURNOUT... YES YOU MUST GIVE HI'M AS MUCH EXERCISE AS POSSIBLE  ....CIRCULATION IS WHAT GETS ALL THE STUFF THRU IS .....SYSTEM  .....ALL THAT EXPENSI'VE STUFF YOU ARE FEEDING HIM EVERY TIME A HORSE TAKES A STEp
THEY PUMP THE BLOOD AROUND THEIR BODY ....DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE MUD....JUST CLEAN HIM OFF WHEN YOU BRING HIM IN  ....ITS REALLY NOT A BIG DEAL...ONCE YOU MAKE IT A PART OF YOUR ROUTINE  .......YOU CAN USE A BUCKET OF HOT WATER AND A TINY BIT OF SHAMPOO AND BLEACH  AND JUST USE A WASHCLOTH TO RUB OFF THE MUD IF YOU ARE TAKING HI'M DIRECTLY TO A NICE CLEAN STALL  OR YOU CAN SPRAY HI'M OFF...WHATEVER....I LIKE THE TINY BIT OF BLEACH CAUSE I KNOW IT KILLS THINGS  .....I AM 30 MINUTES WEST OF TRAVERSE CITY  ABOUT 2.5 HOURS AWAY NORTH OF YOU ... PUSH THE LYSINE TO YOUR HORSE,,,I'M SURE YOU WILL SEE AN I'MPORVEMENT  ....PLEASE SIGN MY GUEST BOOK  THANK YOU MY FRIEND FOR YOUR TIME

Everytime I think he is getting better ....he gets a new scab or growth which is frustrating. Maybe I'm not getting his legs completely dry after ....washing. I've been drying off with a towel and then letting him air dry before applying the salve. ......I have used the Nitrofurzone dressing but not mixed with DMSO. I have to say that the Nitrofurzone is messy and everything sticks to it. .......Do you think this disease comes from the ground.......? I've ....recently put Lime down because someone has told me that it helps to kill off bacteria. Not for sure on this but I figure it will help my pasture to grow. ......On another subject I've been giving him fresh garlic to help keep the flys away. Have you ever heard of this before? Thanks, Jacki rjdeyoungranch@sbcglobal.net

hi jackie.....the lysine and s0ybean meal will pretty much eliminate the new breakouts we get the lysine from united vet .....its called pure lysine 1 800 328 6652  ....its about 55.00 i think  we have a standing automatic reorder on file .............for out one horse we get a 5 lb tub every month .......we also have a standing reorder order to horseteck  ....they make glanzen....i really swear it is a miracle .....we use about 2-3 bags of soybean meal and alfalfa pellets  .......these have the highest source of lysine found in nature  and grape see extract is the most.....powerful anti oxidant found in nature  ........we use the oil from meijers grocery store  ......we also use vitiamin c becuase it boosts the absorption of lysine.........your shampoo is good but the most important thing is .........the consistancy of treatment..not what shampoo you use ....remember stress reaseses all sorts of bad hamful chemicals in he body so keep your horse happy  ....make sure he is not with any other horses that stress him out.....people too...send photossarashalda@aol.com

About 1 week ago I eliminated the Alfalfa hay that I was feeding him .....thinking that he may be allergic to it. ....If he was allergic to Alfalfa though I would think he would have ...it all over his body and nose don't you think. My Vet said that it's the process of elimination to see what's causing this. ....Also, I noticed you mentioned stress. .....Back in late September he did have an incident where he went through some fences, got cut up a bit and seemed to be very stressed for a few days along with having a fever......I truly believe all this was from this incident and it's almost like his body can't fight it off. I've even put him on some oral Tucoprim for infection...... Thanks again for your advise. I really appreicate it. ....jackie

thanks jackie.....the two highest sources of lysine found in nature for a horse is  soybeans and alfalfa
i wish i could get my hands on soybean hay but i cannot in this area  ......my clyde did go thru a stage of total body breakout  .....it was right in the middle of show season .....words cannot describe that ordeal .....but we got thru it somehow ......pain and stress is definately a deterant to healing .......make sure any medicine you put him on does not have.... negative side affects that stress him ......i know it is difficualt to know what your horse is feeling..... but you must ask him to help you ...... you must reach deep inside your self and know that there is a way to achieve a deeper comminication with your horse  ....that is how it was for me  .....i knew i need information from my horse  ....i knew my horse had a spirit  .............i knew i had one too  .....i knew there had to be a way for them to connect because so much love existed  ...i found it with my horses help
today information between us is free flowing and a definate ingrediant in healing  .....i still fight the demon of scratches every day  but now with my horses help it is much easier  .....if you want to learn more of what i have learned ...my psychic book will help you learn to accelerate healing  SARASHALDA@aol.com

Hi, my name is lori and i was wondering about scratches in drafts. can you ever get rid of it? and is the washing an everyday thing with the lysine? also has skin conditioners helped? like adding a corn oil to the grain. i know it helps with dry skin and gives them a shiny coat.

Sara saw your website on the internet and was interested in the scratches.  Looks so different from what the standardbreds have but we get it constantly from the limestone at the tracks.  I wash it wth Ajax antibacterial soap and rinse well.  Then I take clean nobows and put listerine on full strength and wrap it.  I do it everyday with clean cottons and in about 4 days I have it under control.  Not sure if this would help yours as yours looks different.  Just thought I would put that thought in.
