ride a draft information

IS IT DIFFICULT TO RIDE A DRAFT HORSE?

NO.

I am sure even the most novices of us can easily climb aboard, steer left, right, go, and stop on a draft horse that is used to being ridden.

The average full-blooded draft horse that is used to
being ridden would probably behave just fine and give the rider a very nice ride.

They are generally slow moving and slow thinking in my experience.

They do not usually volunteer even to canter unless
strongly persuaded.

Now if you are talking about highly demanding, high performance training such as the things I do:

  DRESSAGE
HUNT SEAT PLEASURE / EQUITATION
  SADDLE SEAT  PLEASURE / EQUITATION
WESTERN PLEASURE / HORSEMANSHIP
  BAREBACK PLEASURE / HORSEMANSHIP
   PATTERN WESTERN RIDING
REINING   JUMPING   TRAIL

Then I suppose I will have to change my mind and say yes.

To get a draft horse to do more demanding disciplines
such as the ones mentioned above,
 in my opinion,
 is tough.

Even if you have a lot of experience
in these areas
like I did
prior to getting involved with draft horses.

I definitely struggled in the beginning.

The first draft horse I ever worked with
 at this high level
was a young Clydesdale.

 I immediately likened it to a cross-between a
 thoroughbred and a dragon.

No warm blood I ever rode in grand prix dressage
 or jumping
could even come close to
the power, suspension, and impulsion
 that this horse had!

Wow I thought.
I just discovered completely new universe.

Now how am I going to harness the immense power
and energy
of this skyscraper?

I only rode this two year old for 30 days
and put HIM back out to pasture like I always do.

The next horse I climbed on was an older Belgian.

I did not even know it was the same species!

This horse was a dead brick on the sides and in the mouth.

I could not even easily make HIM  trot.

Wow. I had a lot to learn about draft horses.

One thing I knew for sure…my life would never ever be the same.

I was trying to learn about riding and training draft horses.

Trying so hard, but I didn’t know
& couldn’t find anyone who did what I was attempting to do.

Frustrating to say the very least.
No books.
 Nothing.

So I started going to draft horse shows to watch the riding classes.

I was eager to learn all I could as quickly as I could.

When I did finally find a draft show, it usually did not even have a single riding class!

 If it did,
the class was horrifying to watch,
the horses were terribly out of control
especially at the lope.

I feared for the safety of the judge
and ring steward
and photographer!
Geeze!
I was speechless.

I could not find anyone to watch that was good.

So I thought.
 And I thought some more.

Gosh darn it…I know how to train a small horse really well

…I suppose
I will just have to muddle my way thru this
and figure things out for myself.

that is what I did
and this is how it happened.

I hope my trial and tribulations
will be a blessing to you
so you do not have to struggle as I had to.

this  is only one small persons view of things.

Only my opinion for what it is worth.

The methods that have worked for me.
SARA SHALDA.

They have been very successful.
Please remember I’m not a great author or writer.

hi sara  ,
its me Julie Wesson from from the show last week...
this is a really weird email so im just going to come out and say this because it truly is a compliment
even though it many not sound like it
..........I was wrong about you.
after meeting you in person i have realized
the dangers in listening to gossip.....
..so let this be a lesson to everyone out there tooo...
.listening to others who were obviously jealous for
something.... made me not even want to come and
talk to you  even though your horse was so gorgeous i was about peeing my pants.

the point im trying to make is this...
im so glad you said hi to me and
we started talking because
i soon realized what a really super cool and
 sweet person you are.

i know that sounds so totally dumb, but
you are sooooooooo different than what i had in my head.

im so glad we met and i will definitely take you up on
 your lesson offer.

thank you so much for the helpful advice too...it really
made alot of sense and i havn't stopped thinking about it.

the more i think about it-the more
excited i am to get my horse out and
 start doing your stuff.
  thanks for that.

i reeeely needed that spark to move my lazy butt.  :0)

so even though this goofy letter may not sound like a compliment,
   please know it is and
how wonderful i think you and clyde are.

i will shout it to the whole world to not be
 dumb and be gossipee.

this girl works hard and kiks butt  !

everyone loves her and she is very smiley and nice
she helps people all the time free of charge and
she knows alot about alot of things.

there sara..how that for a cheerleader  ?  LOL

  well gotta make dinner now....

please write an article on your awesome website about
 proper stirrup length.

every one i talk to tells me something different,
im ready to pull my hair out.
   i figure since you won
hunt seat and saddle seat all at one show,
you must have this figured out.

thanks again for letting me
 babble on about stuff.
i look forward to your reply. sincerely Julie W.
